About Dr. Alexandra Ackerman

Dr. Alexandra Ackerman is a board-certified psychiatrist licensed in New York and Massachusetts, with deep experience in both academic psychiatry and community-based care. She is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, where she supervises psychiatry residents. She is also a member of the Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry (GAP), a national think tank focused on shaping the future of mental health care.

She earned her MD from Columbia University and completed her psychiatry residency at Weill Cornell Medical Center. Throughout her career, she has provided care in university counseling centers, public hospitals, and community clinics—settings that continue to shape her understanding of how individuals navigate their roles, relationships, and environments.

Her Practice

Dr. Ackerman’s work blends psychodynamic therapy, mindfulness-based strategies, and the thoughtful use of medication. Her approach is informed by a strong appreciation for the broader systems that influence mental health, and by a belief that care should be rooted in understanding, not assumptions.

She works with adults navigating life transitions, emotional distress, and long-standing patterns they’re ready to examine and shift. Her style is collaborative, contextual, and grounded in curiosity about each person’s story.
